Our Story
Maths Doctor was founded by Simon Walsh, a highly experienced and qualified mathematics teacher who has worked for both state and independent schools.
Whilst at Steyning Grammar School, he was responsible for innovation in the teaching of mathematics. In addition he was the Mathematics Co-ordinator for Year 11 Intervention, a pilot programme focused on under performing pupils. That year the school achieved the highest proportion of A*- C grades in its history of GCSE maths results.
Mr Walsh has a strong reputation for his innovative approach to teaching and an ability to relate well to young people. He has been involved for many years in providing both traditional and alternative forms of education and his contributions to these fields have been recognised by significant figures such as Cherie Blair and HRH Prince of Wales. To truly appreciate the innovative culture that underlies this company please view the video to the right which demonstrates an alternative approach to teaching algebra in the classroom.
“My concept behind starting this company was to provide students with access to a learning approach that was most suitable to them, not the one size fits all approach used by schools. The key is to first engage the student; this is a necessary precondition to learning that is often neglected and results in students feeling unmotivated and inhibited. Whether the student is a gifted young mathematician who needs to be constantly challenged by an equally gifted tutor, or a struggling GCSE student who needs a tutor who can speak their language and deliver maths through activities or with the help of exciting technology, Maths Doctor is about delivering a learning experience that is tailored to the individual”
